Jayne's 1940 Almanac

You can probably guess why I was drawn to this 1940 almanac. I thought it was neat to see my name in print! I got it a week ago when we stopped by Pottery Place Antiques in Red Wing, MN.

Before purchasing the almanac (I paid a whopping $1.00), I had never heard of Dr. David Jayne. I have since learned that he was a pioneer in the field of proprietary medicine (Carminative Balsam, Liniment, Tonic Vermifuge), and his business empire lasted over 100 years. Dr. Jayne published his first almanac in 1843, and is credited with being one of the first to use the almanac as a promotional device.

Dr Jayne's almanacs and medicine bottles make great collector items. To learn more, read this and this.
