Valentine: Honest Injun

To My Valentine
HONEST INJUN
I Think You're Swell
(A-MERI-CARD, Made in the U.S.A. 0-217)

This valentine is larger than most of the cards I have in my collection (5 1/2"  wide x 7 1/2"  length)The inscription on the back reads "To James, From Harold."  At one time the card was glued into a scrapbook, which explains the condition of the back side.

The use of the phrase "Honest Injun" on a valentine card speaks of a time when it was acceptable to use derogatory and offensive terms.  Yikes!

  1. It would be interesting to know the story behind this card. Was it sent by an adult male to another adult male? Or was it a mother who had written the card out for her younger son?...if the latter is true, why would it be written in cursive for a young child? Hmmm.

  2. Good question. Another thought - perhaps it is from a teen gal to a teen guy! Would explain the cursive...
